Aerogel is a typical nano-porous material, formed by the aggregation of colloidal particles or polymers, and is a highly dispersed three-dimensional porous solid material with gas as the dispersion medium. Its pore size ranges from 1 to 100nm, with a porosity of 80% to 99.8%.
Description
Aerogel particles mostly semi-transparent and extremely light in weight. It is also known as "solid smoke" or "frozen smoke". The density of common silica aerogel is approximately 0.2 grams per cubic centimeter, which is only one fifth of that of water. It is one of the lightest solids in the world and currently has the lowest thermal conductivity among all solid and porous materials. Its heat transfer coefficient is much lower than that of still air, usually only about half of that of still air. Many aerogels have super hydrophobicity, high water repellency and low water absorption rate. Its porous structure gives it an exceptionally large specific surface area, making it an ideal material for adsorbing pollutants in water. It has a significant hindering effect on the speed of sound wave propagation.
1. Appearance: Translucent, extremely lightweight, often referred to as “solid smoke” or “frozen smoke.”
2. Density: Typical silica aerogel particles have a density of around 0.2 g/cm³, about one-fifth that of water.
3. Porosity: 80%–99.8%, providing a highly porous structure.
4. Specific Surface Area: Very high, making them ideal for adsorption and filtration applications.
5. Thermal Conductivity: Extremely low, far below that of still air, offering excellent insulation.
6. Hydrophobicity: Many particles are highly water-repellent, preventing moisture absorption.
7. Acoustic Performance: The porous structure helps reduce sound transmission.
Shape and Size: Aerogel particles are typically irregularly shaped, but can be customized to various forms, such as spherical, rectangular, or other shapes as required.
1. Building & Construction: Used for wall insulation, roofs, and other building components to reduce heat loss, improve energy efficiency, and maintain comfortable indoor temperatures.
2. Industrial: Ideal for insulating high-temperature pipelines, vessels, and equipment, helping reduce energy consumption and protect machinery from heat damage.
3. Energy Storage: Applied in batteries and other energy storage devices for thermal management, improving efficiency and safety by controlling temperature fluctuations.
4. Solar Energy: Incorporated in solar collectors and thermal energy storage systems to enhance heat retention and energy conversion efficiency.
5. Water Treatment: Utilized as an adsorbent to remove pollutants, heavy metals, and other contaminants from water due to its high surface area and porous structure.
6. Catalysis: Serves as a carrier or support material for catalysts, providing a large surface area for chemical reactions and improving reaction efficiency.
7. Aerospace: Provides thermal protection for spacecraft, satellites, and high-temperature components, ensuring safety and stability in extreme environments.
8. Electronics & Electrical: Used to insulate electronic components, circuit boards, and electrical equipment, reducing heat buildup and improving device reliability.
